At Hua Nani Partners (HNP), we believe that bold, collaborative policy and strategy work is essential to tackling the climate crisis. We partner with philanthropy, governments, nonprofits, startups, and international actors to seed the next generation of climate and energy solutions.
Our team brings decades of experience across sectors: philanthropy, government, advocacy, and clean technology. We are a fully virtual team with hubs in Hawai‘i and California as well as staff in New York, Washington D.C., and we work across time zones to support clients globally. At our core, we value curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to meaningful climate action.
THE OPPORTUNITY
HNP is seeking a highly accomplished professional to serve as a Principal within our team. In this role, you’ll help drive new business opportunities, deliver client work, and strengthen relationships with partners who share our vision for accelerating climate action. The ideal candidate will be widely respected in the climate and energy field and bring a record of advancing innovative strategies at the subnational (state and local) level.
This is a unique opportunity to help shape the trajectory of a nimble, high-impact consultancy where climate action is at the core of everything we do. You’ll play a critical role in extending HNP’s reach, developing new solutions to address gaps in the field, building strategic partnerships, and translating bold ideas into tangible results. We are especially interested in candidates who can bring geographic diversity to our team (currently based in HI, CA, DC, and NY) and contribute expertise on climate and energy policy contexts in other jurisdictions.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Conceive, pitch, and secure new initiatives that advance subnational climate action.
Identify, cultivate, and secure new clients and projects aligned with HNP’s mission and capabilities, including from philanthropy, nonprofits, government, and cleantech/investors.
Build and maintain trusted relationships with key leaders, decision-makers, and funders across our professional ecosystem.
Develop high-quality proposals and scopes of work that respond to client needs and advance climate and energy solutions.
Collaborate with other team members to ensure new opportunities are well-matched to HNP’s organizational strengths and capacity.
Monitor industry trends, policy developments, and funding landscapes, and speak/write regularly to best position HNP for emerging opportunities and as a thought leader in our sector.
Deliver high-quality work that consistently meets or exceeds client expectations and contributes to HNP’s reputation for excellence.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Recognized leadership and credibility, with strong relationships across the climate, energy, and cleantech space.
Demonstrated success in business development, client growth, or partnerships in consulting, policy, philanthropy or related sectors.
Deep understanding of subnational climate and energy policy contexts, with knowledge extending beyond HI, CA, DC, and NY.
Entrepreneurial spirit, enthusiasm for developing and executing new ideas, and comfort working independently in a remote environment.
Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to turn complex ideas into compelling pitches and narratives.
Alignment with HNP’s mission and values of collaboration, curiosity, and commitment to climate action.
BONUS POINTS IF YOU HAVE
Experience raising and managing philanthropic or government funding for climate initiatives.
A proven track record of translating new concepts into impactful programs and long-term partnerships.
Expertise in regions or policy landscapes not currently represented on the HNP team.
BENEFITS & COMPENSATION
The starting salary for this role will be $155,000 annually, with an annual performance-based bonus and the possibility of additional performance-based incentives tied to business development success.
